The saying "Eala Frya Fresena" is first attested in 1585 by Cornelius Kempius as "eele ffrye ffryse" for West Frisia, the area west of the Lauwers - a small river running roughly north-south on the border between the Dutch provinces of Groningen and Friesland. In 1617 it was mentioned in writing as "Ela fria fresena" (or fresa).
